It was January 1976 in Beirut, Lebanon. Each of the eight soldiers was heavily armed, carrying an American-made M16 assault rifle with an M203 40mm grenade launcher attached, plus a Browning high-powered pistol with a staggered 13-round magazine.
This was state-of-the-art weaponry, the sort of kit not available to conventional military forces.
